Show your lips some love.

When you think of exfoliating, you may only think of your body and your face. What some don’t always think of, is their lips.

Your lips do a ton for you on a daily basis and it’s super important to take time and thank them once in a while. Our lips have a thinner layer of skin than the rest of our body and they lose moisture easily. Sure, lip balms are handy and can provide relief when chapped but exfoliating with a lip scrub will help maintain moisture and that perfect pout.

If you are a DIY diva, below are some really great scrubs that you can whip up quickly using basic ingredients you may have in your pantry. If shop-til-you-drop is more your calling, below are some really great scrubs I have personally put through the test and love.

Almond & Mint Lip Scrub

Brown sugar gently removes dry skin while the sweet almond oil hydrates. This scrub is super effective and will surely get you through the day without reaching for lip balm. Plus, you can be extra cute and add a bit of butcher’s twine and a chic tag for a perfect gift for friends.

What you will need: brown sugar mint

1 teaspoon honey

1 teaspoon sweet almond oil

1 drop peppermint essential oil

1/2 teaspoon brown sugar

In a medium size bowl, mix brown sugar and sweet almond oil until fully combined. Stir in the honey until sugar mixture is fully coated and add in the drop of peppermint oil. Spoon out a dime size amount and rub gentry on your lips for about 15-20 seconds. Rinse off with warm water and  washcloth. Store in a cool dry place until next use.

Honey & Cinnamon Lip Scrub

Cinnamon is no longer just for making French toast. You can use this naturally-stimulating ingredient in your lip scrub for a natural plumping sensation and seriously soft lips.

What you will need: honey scrub.jpg

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1/2 tablespoon olive oil

1/2 tablespoon raw honey

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon powder

In a medium size bowl, mix all ingredients together until fully combined. Apply a small amount directly to lips with fingertips and gently slough off dry, dead skin cells. Rinse with warm water.

Coffee Lip Scrubcoffee scrub.jpg

As if we needed more coffee in our lives… just kidding, we do!

What you will need:

1 teaspoon honey

  1 teaspoon olive oil

  2 teaspoons coffee grounds

Using a medium sized bowl, mix everything together until it forms a paste-like texture. Using your finger tips, rub onto your lips in a circular motion for 20-25 second. Rinse with hot water.

Hanalei Sugar Lip Scrubscrub

So far I have only been able to find a travel size of this little guy but it is $20.00 worth of some seriously good ingredients. Made with real Maui sugar crystals, pure kukui nut oil (packed with vital fatty acids and vitamins A, C, and E that naturally soothe) and Shea butter. If you have a nut allergy – this is NOT your lip scrub. I purchased mine from Urban Outfitters but they have since sold out. You can order it directly from the Hanalei website or Amazon.

Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrubbubblegum.jpg

Three things you can’t go wrong with having – 1. Anything from Lush. 2. Anything bubblegum flavored. 3. Anything edible. If you need more reason to try really any of the Lush lip scrubs – they are also vegan and instead of removing after applying the scrub, you are supposed to just lick it away. All Lush lip scrubs are $10.95 for a 25g jar.

Show your lips some loving and they will thank you. Do you have a homemade scrub that you use? Let me know and I’d love to test it out.
