Good for her, not for me – concealer faves and misses.

I feel like concealer is the most underrated makeup product out there. Makeup displays are crowded with beautiful lipsticks, metallic eye shadows and flashy highlighters but really, without a good concealer – these products wouldn’t look half as good on your face.

Luckily, I never really struggled much with acne growing up and even now as a 20-something I get the odd spot here and there but that is it. What I do have though are dark non-designer bags under my eyes. Pair those with seasonal allergies – wish me the best of luck! I also have freckles… a lot of freckles. I don’t admit this much but I actually try to cover my freckles with my makeup everyday. Some of m closest friends don’t even know the extent of my freckles. I love them on other people and think they are beautiful but for some reason, I view them as imperfections on my own skin.

For those reasons, I get super excited to try new concealing products whenever I have the opportunity. I tend to look for lightweight formulas with a medium coverage that I can build with or a full coverage right out the gates.

I know this is a touchy subject and really depends on your preference but I tend to apply my concealer before my foundation. I find that it brightens up the dark spots and allows my skin have a more consistent complexion before going in with my foundation and I also use less foundation doing it this way. To each their own on this subject.

Also, I have found that using a tinted primer under my concealer helps a lot also! If you have spots or scars, consider choosing a green based primer to counteract the redness and if you have dull lifeless-looking skin, try applying a lavender based primer.

Below are my personal faves and passes when it comes to concealers. Please remember that just because a products doesn’t work for me, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a fair try for yourself. A few years ago I read Amy Poehler’s book, Yes Please and there were so many good take aways from it but the one that stood out the most for me and I repeat all the time is “Good for her! Not for me!” Think about that and keep that in mind daily.

tarte tape shape

This is for sure a ride or die product that I cannot live without. I have been obsessed with it since day one and it holds a permanent spot in my makeup bag. Tarte Cosmetics’ Shape Tape Contour Concealer is a holy grail for beauty lover worldwide and it is so worth the hype! It covers everything like a dream and it stays in place all day long. If you are looking for industrial strength concealer, believe me when I say this is it. It comes in 14 different shades and is available on Tarte’swebsite or at Sephorafor about $31.00

It would sound weird if someone told me they have a second ride or due product but the Maybelline Instand Age Rewind is such an amazing age rewindconcealer for me. I would stand behind this statement for my entire life. It is a thin featherweight formula that does a fantastic job under my eyes without looking heavy or cakey. At the price point of under $9.00 it can be found at almost any pharmacy or drug store. The twist applicator with small sponge top makes me easy to apply where you want and have next to no waste. A great alternative to the pricey products on the market but the only downfall is that like most drugstore brands, it only comes in 5 different shades. This wouldn’t be a product I would recommend if you have a deeper complexion.

it cosmeticsIT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye really hit the nail on the head with it’s name. This concealer is a gift from above! The smallest amount really goes a long way and it is very full coverage formula with anti-aging benefits and is waterproof. There are 6 colors in the collection and they all have a natural finish to them. There is no wondering why this is a cult classic among the beauty world. It is however, a small package with a big price tag. It is a .28oz tube for $32.00 at Sephora. If you are looking to treat yourself, I would commit to the splurge and pick this one up in a heartbeat.

master concealAnother win from the drug store for me is the Maybelline FaceStudio Master Conceal. It comes in 5 different shades currently and the packaging design is similar to the Bye Bye Under Eye which leaves little waste left behind in the tube. This is perfect for stubborn little spots and breakouts as the formula is on the thicker side but covers amazingly, blends effortlessly and wears so nicely on the skin. You can find this at almost every drugstore for under $10.00 and it is so worth it!

macFirst, let me take a moment to express how much I hate to put a Mac product on my pass list. I wanted to love this and I really tried to love it but the truth is, it just didn’t love me back.  Sadly the MAC Select Moisturecoverhas been tossed in the bad bin. The product has a very limited wear time and I found it disappeared way to quickly. If any moisture or water gets on your face, it takes the product away with it. It made my under eyes look very dry also. I was really disappointed with Mac on this and for $21.00 there are much better products available.

janeJane Iredale is a harder to find brand that only seems to be carried in salons and spas in Canada. The packaging caught my eye and I felt drawn to give it a try. You can order the Active Light Under-Light concealer directly from their website for $35.00 which is about what I paid at a salon. This product claims to be “unlike any concealer you have ever used!” I would agree with that but not for the reasons I hoped I would. I found this product to be extremely blotchy, flaky and offered horrible coverage. Throughout the day it settled into fine lines and drew attention to them. This is my first opportunity with Jane Iredale so I can’t give you a better product selection from their line.

I am not a huge fan of stick concealers to begin with and to be honest, I don’t know what coverall.jpgcompelled me to try the Wet ‘n’ Wild CoverAll Cover Stick. The stick is way to hard which caused my skin to drag while applying it. I also found it to have a waxy component to it which made it next to impossible to blend out and offers no coverage at all. Thankfully, the cost of this is was less than my coffee so I wasn’t too heartbroken to throw this right into the pass pile.

Do you have a can’t live without concealer? Let me know in the comment section, would love to hear your thoughts!

XOXO.

  1. Great post! I go back and forth with concealer under and on top of foundation. Some days if I need the extra coverage, I find it works better underneath! And some days, I do both lol.

I love the Maybelline concealer. So good! I want to try the Estee Lauder Double Wear concealer.

    1. Aw thanks so much!!
It’s really personal preference I find! Whatever works for you, do it!! I’ve tried the Double Wear and I’m on the fence with it. Couldn’t love or pass it. It does have a smell though and that’s what turns me off a little. Let me know what you think of it if you give it a try!

  2. I’m still looking for that perfect concealer…. Something that doesn’t end up making my face a feel like it hasn’t been washed for weeks!!! Hopefully these will help my search for that perfect face.
